It won't happen. El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Bob Balink says there are not enough petition signatures to hold an election to recall two Falcon District 49 School Board Members.
The petitions circulating were to recall board members Dave Martin and Kent Clawson.
3,497 signatures were needed to recall Martin and Clawson. Only 3,363 were validated for Martin and 3,490 for Clawson. Both have been serving on the school board since 2007, and their terms expire in 2011.
The three other school board members for D-49, Anna Bartha, Dave Stark and Mark Shook do not plan to seek re-election.
The final word goes to Gazette Columnist Barry Noreen, who said before the recall started:
"Off with their heads.
That was the simple solution made famous by the mad Queen of Hearts, and it's a strategy employed by restless natives who want to recall elected officials for a wide variety of reasons.
See, in Colorado, you don't need a reason to recall anyone. As long as you can get a sufficient number of signatures on petitions, you can recall officials because you don't like the way they part their hair, or simply because you don't like the results of the past election.
That's part of the story in Falcon School District 49, where the most vocal recall proponents are people whose efforts to get board seats have been thwarted in the past.
